Acute & Chronic Pain & Injury

Pain is one of the most difficult symptoms that confronts patients and doctors.

Pain plays a vital function in our bodies, often alerting us to underlying health issues. Understandably, however, everyone seeks instant relief.

Conventional medicine often launches an all-out assault on pain by prescribing stronger and stronger drugs in an attempt to suppress the immediate sensation of discomfort.

At SFNM, we take a different approach.

Seeing acute and chronic pain from a holistic perspective is key to proper treatment

Our doctors have earned a reputation for naturally relieving both acute and chronic pain for thousands of people, many of whom have come to us after their pain did not respond to conventional medicine or when side effects of pain medications have become problematic.

We know that pain is a symptom of a deeper cause, and it is our body’s attempt to get our attention to address this cause. Once the cause of pain is successfully identified and treated, pain is either relieved or reduced to more manageable levels.

By taking this deeper holistic view, we're able to achieve results where conventional medicine fails by focusing too narrowly on drugs.

This comprehensive perspective enables us to draw upon a variety of effective natural approaches, such as acupuncture and herbal medicine, selecting the right one, or combination, only when we are sure it will work for the individual. When warranted, we also occasionally employ pharmaceuticals.

Our extensive experience with therapies give us—and you—access to the widest possible range of approaches in dealing with your pain.

Restoring balance for relief for headache, back pain, joint pain, sciatica & more

We often start with traditional Chinese medicine.

Chinese medicine recognizes the role of Qi (pronounced chee) as the animating force that serves to warm us, protect us from external pathogenic factors, promote the functions of the body and hold our organs and tissues in place.

Qi travels along specific pathways called “meridians.”  Each pathway is associated with a particular physiological system and internal organ. When Qi is blocked or obstructed in its flow, pain will occur.

Skilled in acupuncture, our doctors are intimately familiar with each of the hundreds of points and meridians in the body. Inserting needles into these points enables us to restore the normal, healthy flow of Qi to areas where it is deficient and away from where it is in excess.

Relief from pain then follows naturally.

Effective modalities to relieve pain that does not respond to conventional medicine

Our experience has demonstrated that acupuncture treatments work best combined with herbal support.

Herbal medicine is as ancient as acupuncture, and the use of herbs is a major aspect of traditional Chinese medicine. You can use herbs at home between treatments. In some cases, herbs can be prescribed and taken on their own without having to have acupuncture treatments.

Herbal formulas are available in a number of forms. We have a fully stocked pharmacy of herbal tinctures, capsules and tablets.

Acupuncture may also be accompanied by one or more other modalities, if needed, including electric stimulation of acupuncture points, cupping, Tui na and other bodywork modalities.
